Oregon Coast/Nehalem Bay Tour

Nehalem River Tour | Sat | 03/13/2010 | 10:15 AM - 01:45 PM

Ride the tide in the summer or wintertime while watching Cormorants fishing, drying themselves while resting on logs.  Spot a harbor seal looking to snag a Chinook salmon on its way upriver to spawn.  See a horned owl begin its evening prowl beneath a highway bridge. Few places in the world boast the peace and beauty of the Oregon Coast, so gather up your gear and head out for a trip on the beautiful Nehalem Water Trail. Scheduled tours & private tours are available.  Available Year 'round.

Despite close proximity to human civilization, nearby Nehalem Bay State Park, surrounding salt marshes, and undisturbed islands still provide much natural habitat, making encounters with harbor seals, screeching eagles, sea birds and elk not so uncommon. Both upstream and downstream trips offer athletic accomplishment and natural beauty.

Wandering along side the sleepy cities of Nehalem and Wheeler, you can get both a taste of nature and the local community before stepping out of your kayak and into the comforts of coastal accommodations! Don’t forget that the hip and trendy City of Manzanita is just a few miles north.

Cost is $397 for up to 4 persons: $734 for up to 8 persons: $1071 for up to 14 persons.  Total cost includes the driver gratuity & gas surcharge.  In addition, cost for the river tour is $65 pp for the scheduled river tour, or $75 pp for the private river tour. Max. 22 ppl.

Weight ratings for the current fleet of kayaks can accommodate people weighing up to 230 lbs. Cost quote includes RT transportation, kayak rental & guided 3½ hour river tour.  Total time is approx. 8 hours.  Endurance level is moderate.  Low endurance tours are available; please inquire.  Kayak tour is done by Kayak Tillamook. Alternatively, you may choose the Columbia River/Lewis & Clark Waterway with Scappoose Bay Kayak.

WINTERTIME: There are many reasons to try winter kayaking on the coast. For one thing, the water levels in rivers and streams are higher, which means you can paddle father upstream into the hidden creeks and forested waterways. Fewer people means you can get up close to hawks, eagles, elk, river otters and other wildlife. And sometimes the coast is notably warmer than inland areas, especially during an inversion. What’s better than driving out of the metro area fog into the cheerful winter sunshine?

We'll check in with the folks at Kayak Tillamook. Enjoy their wintertime special — Winter Hot Cider Tours, which run through March. Following a half hour of land instruction, the two-hour guided tours come with all needed gear as well as a thermos of hot apple cider for each boater. Rain or shine, it’s a wonderful way to explore the coast and enjoy the season!
