"Oregon's N. Coast in a Nutshell" (#1 + #2 + #3 combined--as time permits; 10-12 hours) - Select stops in ASTORIA, SEASIDE/CANNON BEACH & TILLAMOOK -
Our 1st stop approaching Astoria will be searching for Bald Eagles in the marsh at the Twilight Eagle Sanctuary - 100 acres of wetlands and forest at the approximate site of the Lewis and Clark campsite on November 26, 1805.
  • Then Astoria; the oldest city West of the Rockies. It's a place you don't get to by accident, you have to want to go there. We'll experience spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, Columbia River, Astoria & the 'Graveyard of the Pacific' at the Astor Column . At the "Salmon Canning Capitol of the World", enjoy the Columbia River Maritime Museum, lunch at Bowpicker Fish n Chips (best fish 'n chips) or famous chowder at a local restaurant...and/or the reconstructed fort of Lewis & Clark...
Then bumper cars , taffy, beaches and a Lewis & Clark sight in cheesy Seaside & shopping, luxe life, a 'terrible' lighthouse and a volcanic sea-stack in Cannon Beach. Next, short, easy hikes through an secret old-growth forest and a rugged coastline with ocean views and overlooks on Neahkahnie Mtn-- and stories of 500 year old beeswax & buried treasure...
  • Then onto Tillamook and Oregon's largest Spruce, Cape Meares and the scenic 3 capes route. View one of the most spectacular views in the world with a lighthouse , as well as sea salt, oysters, salmon, sea life and a sub-marine volcano in Pacific City (if we make it that far), Madre mía!

Seaside/Cannon Beach: (stops may include)
  • Turnaround & boardwalk/promenade stroll & Lewis & Clark Salt Works
  • Ecola State Park & Lighthouse (pictures right) - The view to your south illustrates the Oregon Coast’s geological past. High mountains from lava flows emanating from the 'CRBF' tower over the shoreline. They are continually uplifted by the subducting oceanic plate below, and eroded away by the sea. You can see Haystack Rock and from various vantage points you can see the migration of the gray whale. More than 20,000 pass by Ecola Park each winter and spring. If you plan your visit to the coast in a timely fashion (March or December), you're sure to see some of these whales. And you are treated to the story and your best view of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, located one mile from the shoreline--One of the most desolate and unique lighthouses ever to exist in the US..., if not the entire world. Visit www.lighthousefriends.com for a quick, remarkable history of this lonely lighthouse.
  • Buoy's Best Seafood restaurant for meal? - Let me know if you’re interested in a seafood restaurant stop in either Astoria or Seaside. Buoy's Best has the freshest seafood with their seafood market right next door.
