Our current line-up or your custom choice below: (this list may change without notice) - Tasting Tips
  1. Wayfinder - Voted 'Best Brewpub', 'Best Brewer' & 'Brewery of the Year' by New School beer blog (2018) - Article -  Portland’s newest brewery/cocktail bar is Wayfinder Beer, and with almost 9,000 square feet it can fit a massive crowd. The sprawling wood deck itself can fit a hundred guests. With umbrellas for shade, a fire pit for warmth in the evenings, and Wayfinder’s own lagers finally on tap, it’s sure to bring in crowds all summer long. *A lot of breweries have outdoor patios, but this is one of the best.
  2. Cascade Noyaux - It's been 10 years since Cascade started making its very strong, very tart 'Northwest Sours'. Using Lactobacillus, aged months or years in barrels and usually flavored with local fruits, they're unique to the city and the world. It's hugely laborious and time--consuming and worth a try. We'd also recommend Apricot Ale or Kriek, but Noyaux best illustrates Cascade's approach... After shucking the fruit off for other beers, they take the stone, crack it and remove the meat (the noyaux) which gives this beer its amaretto-to-maraschino flavor. Only available at Cascade. What it's known for: Fruit and sour beers by the barrelful. #7 in Oregon after pFriem, Deschutes and Breakside.
  3. Hair of the Dog Adam - When Adam (Hair of the Dog's 1st beer) debuted in 1993, it showed Portland what mature brewing looked like. It's a giant beer, dark and smoky and very very rich. But tread lightly on Adam (10% abv!). Only available at Hair of the Dog.
  4. Upright 6 - Tucked away in a basement brewery, Upright has had a huge effect on our beer, directing the city's palate toward complex, food-friendly ales.  Their #6, a dark rye saison is one of their heavier ales, their most food-friendly and the most unusual. What it's known for: French and Belgian style farmhouse ales, including an array of saisons and sours. #9 in Oregon after pFriem in Hood River, Deschutes, Breakside, Cascade and DeGarde in Tillamook.
  5. Occidental Pilsner - About 5-10 years ago Pilsners and Lagers (Breakside, Ninkasi, Upright, pFriem and Ecliptic) became very popular in Portland. One of our faves is Occidental way out in St John's, which has the richest expression of malt and hops.
  6. Great Notion Ripe IPA - Winner of WWs Feb 2018 blind taste test of damn near every IPA in Portland. It's "a candied IPA so creamy and fruity it almost shoots off into its own category of beer."

  1. Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB)** (2 locations @ 2944 SE POWELL. 503-232-4677 | 3947 N WILLIAMS AVE. (Hopworks BikeBar) Hours: Sunday–Thursday 11:00am–11 pm; Friday–Saturday 11:00am–midnight F-T  FD ORG - Eco-brewpub with hand-crafted organic beer and fresh local ingredients (they walk the talk of reduce, reuse, recycle!). Tours available. VIDEO. Come inside to see what makes our town sooooo Portland by ordering an organic beer, a vegan or gluten-free item and then going next door to the tattoo parlor! Their one of about a dozed breweries in the U.S. to exclusively brew organic beers. Yes...it's a big deal. Insider's Tip - The Survival "7 Grain" Stout and Hopworks IPA are 2 classics, but don't pass the chance to try special releases, like a Belgium strong ale or fresh hop blonde.  Insider's Tip #2: At the N Williams location, jump on one of the stationary bikes out front and get into time trial form. Each pedal stroke produces for the off-the-grid ECoFlats building that houses the Bikebar - (PSSTS! - Each Fall they throw a Bide-to-Beer-Fest, with live music, bike competitions (like BMX throwing) and plenty of beer.)
  2. Hair of the Dog Brewing Co.  FD - (61 SE YAMHILL ST.) - Hours can be limited (TUE-SAT 11:30AM - 10PM, SUN 11:30AM - 8PM). Taste up to 8 rare beers on tap. With industrial garage doors thrown open, you'll taste little-known beer varieties. Try the Fred (10%!) or Doggie Claws (11.5%!!)  (Like Young Guns II or the video for Michael Jackson's “Black or White” a full accounting of Hair of the Dog's importance requires some historical context. When Alan Sprints opened his brewery in 1993, Americans simply didn't make barrel-aged or bottle-conditioned beers. Sprints found inspiration on a trip to Belgium. The brewery reserves special releases for its taproom, and Sprints is now a local legend and the type of guy who gets flown down to L.A. to host tastings at fancy pizzerias. Almost everything Hair of the Dog makes is impressive, even if it's not as unique as it once was. The tasting room is a great place to sample pricey barrel-aged beers from the keg-or spring for a bottle of the 1994 vintage of Adam, 12 ounces of local history priced at $50. Big, boozy beers that age well. Order from the vintage list in the taproom or if you'd like to taste a few draft beers at one time, ask to “walk the dog.” MARTIN CIZMAR. WW) In this big, boxy former warehouse; what looms large is the outstanding ales. With cult following status, these beers were made to be cellared and aged and are highly collectible. The complex big beers are named after the brewmasters friends, Fred, Adam, Ruth, Matt & Michael. Take your time no matter what you drink--these beers deserve your full attention. Insider's Tip - You can order rare bottles inside the tasting room, such as "From the Wood" beers. Blue Dot is one of the more delicate and interesting of the IPAs in town) - (PSSTS! - The owner/brewer likes to cook. The short ribs braised in beer and mac n cheese are his.) -  SHOUTOUT - When Adam (Hair of the Dog's 1st beer) debuted in 1993, it showed Portland what mature brewing looked like. It's a giant beer, dark and smoky and very very rich. But tread lightly on Adam (10% abv!). Only available at Hair of the Dog.
  3. Coalition Brewing Co. (2724 SE Ankeny St.) 894-8080  HOURS: Tues-Fri 3pm-12am, Sat-Sun 12pm-12am. - Supports home brewers by showcasing their beers on tap. Now that's local! Even if it's only about 3 years old, Coalition is very much a classic Portland brewpub. Though it now bottles and cans, Coalition's soul is an inviting tasting room where a neighborhood crowd shows up to chat while serviced by some of our town's friendlier bartenders. The flagship Two Dogs IPA is magnificently balanced, with the crisp bitterness of dandelion leaves and a melty caramel sweetness. It's a throwback to when IPAs offered floral, zesty complexity instead of stinging acidity. It was a beer I remembered loving, even as I sipped my first pint. Founders Kiley Hoyt and Elan Walsky started as homebrewers participating in Widmer Brothers' collaboration project, and the brewery pays it forward with a similar Coalator program. The Coalator Program brings home brewers into their brewery so they can brew their best recipes. Ask if a Coalator beer is on tap, and taste just how good home brew can be. MARTIN CIZMAR. WW ...quietly sit with a book and a pint and while away a rainy afternoon or...on on more sunny days, check out the sidewalk picnic tables. Ask the bartender if a coalator is on tap from their collaboration project to help reward the DIYs. (Insider's Tip - There's no better deal than the $3 beer on Wednesdays and $10 pitchers on Sundays) - (PSSTS! - The food is made by former food cart Savvy Js, which went brick n mortar when they partnered with Coalition)
  4. Breakside Brewery  (820 NE Dekum St. & 5821 SE International Way, Milwaukie. Also in Slabtown (see below) 719-6475. HOURS: Noon-10 pm Sunday, 3-10 pm Monday-Thursday, noon-11 pm Friday-Saturday. F-T (PENDING AS OF 3/20)  FD - Gaining instant fame in 2015 for their IPA ("Best Beer in Oregon"), they are known for experimental ales using culinary ingredients. The brewery makes beer in many idiom's (IPAs, pilsners, kolsches, saisons and abbeys). 2 locations in the NW (Slabtown) and NE (out toward the airport). The Oregonian named Breakside IPA "The Best Beer in Oregon" in 2015; it also took the gold for American-Style IPA at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival. In 2016 they received a silver medal at the World Beer Cup for their Smoked Porter and bronze for their Will's Altbier and ESB. For $10, you can fill your flights with six 5-ounce pours. Choose from, amongst others, the German pilsner, West Coast pale ale and the Guajillo-chili-laced porter. "Most breweries trade in kegs, pints or bottles. North Portland's Breakside does its best work with taster trays. The brewery's year-round offerings are solid-the choco-chili Aztec is one of our top 10 beers-but given that Breakside made a staggering 83 different brews last year, try as many nips as you can. A 4-ounce pour is often the right portion, too, with options ranging from pleasantly interesting offerings like ultra-hot Szechuan Blonde and super-smoky Toro Red, to over-salty Cucumber Gose and an overly herbal Nordic Porter. But that's all part of the fun at this brewery, which pours beers made with beets and rooibos tea next to ambitious pub fare, including an opulent $10 hummus plate that's actually worth $10." MARTIN CIZMAR WW.  They're making a range of unique brews that blur the lines of food and beer...think beer brewed with whole pumpkins, fresh herbs, cedar boughs, chestnuts, lychee and more. Their Collaboration Fall Harvest Ale (Made with tomatoes, corn, roasted chiles and lime) will have you salsa dancing through the brewery in September. (Insider's Tip - The Aztec Ale is made with cocoa as well as habanero and serrano peppers) - (PSSTS! - The seasonal beers move fast here--if you see a good one, get it now. 2nd best in Oregon after pFriem in Hood River) What it's known for: Faultless beers across all styles, led by its award-winning flagship IPA.
  5. Breakside Brewery-Slabtown (1570 NW 22nd ave.) FD - The space impresses: window-paneled garage doors and a larger-than-life mural mark the entrance. With two stories and two bars (soon to be three when the rooftop is completed), the Slabtown brewpub will offer 16 of its exclusive beers on tap and spruced-up pub grub-like massive cheese and meat-filled tater tots, jalapeño poppers, and Jacobsen Salt-finished nachos!
  6. Ecliptic Brewing -(825 N Cook St. 265-8002) SUN - THURS 11AM - 10PM | FRI - SAT 11AM - 12AM | HAPPY HOUR 3PM - 6PM DAILY  - In 2016 they received a GOLD medal at the World Beer Cup for theirCapella Porter. "You may not have yet stopped by Ecliptic Brewing, but you've almost certainly had John Harris' beer. The Oregon brewing luminary perfected the recipes for some of the state's most iconic brews, including Deschutes' Black Butte Porter and McMenamins' Hammerhead. Harris spent three decades working under others, most recently at Full Sail. Now, he's his own boss, running a just-opened brewpub in a colossal former auto-body shop off Mississippi Avenue. The space pays homage to Harris' love of astronomy, with constellations pinpricked in the concrete walls and a chandelier shaped like a lopsided figure eight to represent the sun's path through the sky. The beers, accordingly, are named after stars. Try the supremely balanced Procyon Pale Ale or the Spica Hefepils, which is bottom-fermented like a Pilsner but unfiltered-it's a cloudy golden lager with a pleasant, lingering bitterness. On a recent Friday, the place was packed, with grown-ups eating trout po' boys and kids munching on grilled cheese. I'll be back in a few weeks-Harris plans to roll out new beers around the solstices and equinoxes, and next up is a hearty winter ale." WW
  7. Deschutes Brewery & Public House - FD (210 NW 11th Ave.) HOURS Sun-Tues 11am-10pm Wed-Thurs 11am-11pm Fri-Sat 11am-12am It's still on the short-list for the state's best brewery, and has a huge selection--everything from 4.5% cask ales, experimental Belgium's to imperial giants. Try their Fresh-Squeezed IPA. In the Pearl. This Portland-outpost brewpub (originally from Bend Oregon) is a tight-tabled Pearl District beer barn, not overtly pleasant, but one settles in immediately upon tasting its rotating array of interesting seasonals and experimentals. Winter favorites included the Cassis Abbey, a wine-stained black currant sour with a dry finish, and the fireplace comforts of the house's Bomb Squad Smoked Imperial, which clambers back to tickle the entire top of the palate, and maybe even the sinuses, before settling into dark chocolate. So even if you're rammed too close to some dude who just tricked out his Dodge Ram for no reason at all, the taster tray will soon distract you, and the servers are overworked but quick on delivery. And their garlic burger comes with whole cloves of garlic so soft you can spread them around! MATTHEW KORFHAGE WW.  Some of the one-offs beers are brewed on-site in the shining copper kettles, but most are brewed in the larger Bend brewery. Classics include Mirror Pond and Black Butte Porter. But don't ignore the one-offs, which include saisons to black IPAs, raspberry stouts, smoked wheat beers and gluten-free spiced golden ales. Insider's Tip - There is always 2 beers on cask. Try the same beer on cask and keg and notice the difference, all in the name of beerducation) - (PSSTS! - 5th largest craft brewery in the U.S. & 4th Best in Oregon after pFriem and Breakside) What it's known for: Drinkable pale ales and one pitch-black imperial stout.
  8. Rogue Ales Public House & Rogue Eastside‎ FD - (2 locations @ 1339 NW Flanders & 929 SE 9th Ave.) Hours: Sunday - Thursday: 11AM - 12AM; Friday & Saturday: 11AM - 1AM; Sunday: 11AM - 11PM Rogue is a small revolution, which expresses itself through handcrafted Ales, Porters, Stouts, Lagers and Spirits, and this is the way they conduct their business. The spirit of the Rogue brand, even the name, suggests doing things differently, a desire and a willingness to change the status quo. They believe if a Rogue Ale, Porter, Stout, Lager or Spirit cannot be all of these things, it should not be made at all. Based in Newport, they make some uniquely homegrown brews using malted baley and aromatic hops from Oregon farms owned by the brewery. These beers make up the "Chatoe" series, which expresses Oregon terroir.  The whole array of their brews are available on tap and in bottles at this outpost.
  9. Portland Brewing/ Pyramid Brewing CLOSED  (2730 NW 31st) HOURS: Monday 11:00am - 9:00pm; Tuesday - Thursday 11:00am - 10:00pm; Friday 11:00am - 11:00pm; Saturday 12:00pm - 11:00pm; Sunday 12:00pm - 9:00pm FD - Home of McTarnahan's Taproom/Pyramid Breweries. Every year Portland Brewing has a charity keg-tossing contest, and the throwers have to wear kilts! The Taproom with their great copper brewing tanks in Northwest Portland serves up great pints or samples and food to go with them. Portland Brewing offers a tasty core of staple beers throwing some great seasonal mixes in to keep it interesting.
  10. Back Pedal Brewing Mon-Fri 3-10pm; Sat 11-11pm; Sun 11-8pm - 1425 nw Flanders St. (971) 400-5950 - The rotating house brews are varied in flavor, but consistent in fresh taste. They also offer guest taps which I've found to be thoughtfully curated, and when I'm torn on what to try the staff is wonderful - knowledgeable, friendly, and laid-back. YELP
  11. Baerlic Brewing 2235 SE 11TH ave. OPEN MON-THURS 4-10, FRI 2-12, SAT 12-12, SUN 12-9 (503) 477-9418 - "Of their five year-round beers, I prefer the Noble Oatmeal Stout. That said, there's something for every taste. Whether you prefer dark or light, hops or malt, strong or sessionable, one of the 12 taps will speak to you." YELP
  12. Culmination Brewing FD 2117 NE Oregon St. HOURS: Monday- Thursday: 12-9pm; Friday: 12-10pm; Saturday: 12-10pm; Sunday: 12-9pm  (971) 254-9114 - "The atmosphere and setting is charming, the beer is solid, and the hospitality is excellent... I enjoyed a Brett IPA. This was a damn' fine beer, very well balanced and not too hopped up. I love hops, though. I would re-order and re-order this one." YELP
  13. Ex Novo Monday – Thursday: 3PM - 10PM  //  Friday: 3PM - 11PM; Saturday: 12PM - 11PM  //  Sunday: 12PM - 10PM - 2326 N Flint Ave  (503) 894-8251 - "In addition to the amazing beers and scrumptious provisions... it also donates 100% of its net profits to organizations changing the community and the world for the better... If they have the scotch ale on tap then give it a try or five." YELP
  14. Great Notion Brewing Sun-Thurs 12pm-10pm; Fri and Sat 12pm-11 pm - 2204 NE Alberta St. (503) 548-4491 & 2444 NW 28th Ave. - FD  "Juice Sr. is a citrusy IPA that has the smoothest finish I've ever had in an IPA. It has just the right amount of hoppy, floral notes. It is an extremely potent beer at 8.2%, but you'd never know it while drinking it. I can't recommend this beer enough." YELP  Great Notion Ripe IPA - Winner of WWs Feb 2018 blind taste test of damn near every IPA in Portland. It's "a candied IPA so creamy and fruity it almost shoots off into its own category of beer."  SHOUTOUT - Winner of WWs Feb 2018 blind taste test of damn near every IPA in Portland. It's "a candied IPA so creamy and fruity it almost shoots off into its own category of beer."
  15. Gigantic Brewing Co. 5224 SE 26TH AVE., PORTLAND, OR 97202 503-208-3416  Reflecting the idiosyncrasies of Portland better than any other, it's one lone regular is their IPA. Everything else is released on a one-time only basis along with their one-time numbered label, and when their gone, their gone.. They're indie, quirky and hugely accomplished. The tasting room is called the Champagne lounge and attracts a huge cadre of locals-in true Portland fashion-before 5pm. In the SE near Reed College.
  16. Alameda Brewhouse CLOSED  FD - 4765 NE FREMONT ST.
  17. Green Dragon Bistro & Pub - Operated by Rogue Ales, head to the Green Dragon, a popular gathering spot for craft beer aficionados. With 62 beers on tap and events that include Meet-the-Brewer nights and Aloha Tuesday (wear a Hawaiian shirt on Tuesdays and your second pint is FREE), the Dragon is not to be missed. Join them annually in mid-October for their Killer Pumpkin Festival, part of BrewPublic's Killer Beer Week! While you're there, try some of the Buckman Botanical Brewery beers brewed on-site. The low- and no-hop beers are made with herbs, spices, flowers and tea.
  18. Von Ebert Brewery, 131 NW 13th Ave., Portland, OR 97209 (503)820-7721 - Former Fat Head's owner Tom Cook starts his own brewery at the same location. The focus is on high volume, which means hop-focused beers and a mix of styles, including IPAs, hazies, pilsners, pales and stouts, among others. Why go: Top-notch beer with a style for everyone, including IPAs, pilsners, stouts and farmhouses; better food than many brewpubs; the big, warm space can accommodate a large group. What to drink: The V.E.B Pils is a clean, pure, brilliant pilsner. Volatile Substance IPA is a candidate for best Northwest IPA around. And the Hegel Sipped Coffee in Bamberg is like smelling an iced coffee, then taking a clean, coffee taste hit turning to sweetness then floral and dry, but not heavy like many coffee beers. What to eat: Von Ebert strives to elevate the menu from classic pub fare to elevated pub cuisine. The original location offers an impressive appetizer menu, plus salads, wings, sandwiches and burgers in the $11 to $15 range. Pizzas ($14) are popular too. Recently added are weekly specials, including schnitzel, a barbecue platter (the highest priced item on the menu at $20), Taco Tuesdays (three for $10) and Meatball Monday ($13).
  19. Apex Beer Bar - Near historic Ladd's Addition. Not a brewery, but Apex is a serious beer bar with 50 taps and an impressive bottle list, a craft-beer mecca. There, long communal picnic tables are packed with people on summer nights and even some drizzly days. But that shouldn't be too much of a surprise-this is Portland; we drink beer no matter the weather. Insider's Tip - Unlike most on-line tap listings-Apex's is always up to date, as it matches the list behind the bar. apexbar.com/menu) - (PSSTS! - No dogs, kids or credit cards. Yes to beer, pinball and food from elsewhere)
  20. Upright Brewing 240 N Broadway.  Open from Thu 5-9pm, Fri 4:30-9pm, Sat 1-8pm, Sun 1-6pm. - Tucked away in the basement of the Leftbank Building across from the Rose Garden Arena, this tasting room is only open Friday - Sunday. Those in the know go here to quaff pints of Belgium-inspired, farmhouse-style ales in what feels like the Batcave of Portland Beerdom.  It's a little underground tasting room inside one of Portland's coolest, most innovative breweries and is a Portland secret. The place is named after jazz musisian Charles Mingus (& his upright bass). The beer is Belgium and French Farmhouse. Insider's Tip - Take your time is this relaxed cavern, where beer ages in barrels and brews in steel. Play a board game or chat up other imbibers, most of whom will be Upright super-fans who can tell you about their favorite releases or Alex's (brewmaster) accomplishments.  - (PSSTS! - Some of their beers are named after numbers that corresponds to that beers 'starting gravity', the amount of sugar in the beer before it ferments. #9 in Oregon after pFriem in Hood River, Deschutes, Breakside, Cascade and DeGarde in Tillamook) - SHOUTOUT - Upright has had a huge effect on our beer, directing the city's palate toward complex, food-friendly ales.  Their #6, a dark rye saison is one of their heavier ales, their most food-friendly and the most unusual. What it's known for: French and Belgian style farmhouse ales, including an array of saisons and sours.
  21. Cascade Barrel House 939 SE Belmont St. Hours: Sun - Mon: Noon - 10pm; Tues - Thu: Noon - 11pm; Fri - Sat: Noon - 12am FD  - Cascade Barrel House is particularly interesting, serving 'Belgium-Style' beers aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels and lambic-style sour beers flavored with apricot or cherry.  An oddity you won't soon forget with big oak barrels bubbling with beers-in-progress--barrel aged sour ales blended with everything from figs to peaches to lemon peel to apricots. Insider's Tip - Every Tuesday at 6, a guest taps the barrel of the day which includes a spray of beer called the 'sour shower') - (PSSTS! - This is no fancy bar: Sports are on the TV behind the bar and the food is served in plastic baskets. #7 in Oregon after pFriem, Deschutes and Breakside) - SHOUTOUT: Cascade Noyaux - It's been 10 years since Cascade started making its very strong, very tart 'Northwest Sours'.
  22. Tugboat Brewing Company - CLOSED 711 SW Ankeny St, Downtown Portland, 503-226-2508. Hours: Mon: 5-10pm / Tue: 4pm-12 midnight / Wed: 4pm-12 midnight / Thu: 4pm-12 midnight / Fri: 4pm-1am / Sat: 4pm-1am  Specializing in British-style strong ales. Insider's Tip - Their most notorious beer is the Chernobyl Stout. With 13% ABV, each person is limited to 2 half pints) - (PSSTS! - Yes Tugboat is a tiny brewery and they don't have the best beer in town)
  23. Burnside Brewing CLOSED  FD - FIRE PIT 701 E. Burnside 503-208-3476. Open 11am 10/12  -  Feel the sweet heat on the "dog-friendly" Burnside Brewing patio with "beers that are crisp and refreshing. Seasonal brews and a bank of rotating guest taps keep the flavors as fresh as the locally sourced ingredients in their ambitious kitchen...  Burnside Brewing is at least as good at pairing food with its beer as it is at cramming foodie flavors into its brews. From its famous Sweet Heat-a standard chili beer even if it is brewed with apricot purée and Jamaican Scotch bonnet peppers-to sweet-appled winter strongs and sea-urchin Uni Ale, the brewery trumpets its use of obscurities like plum, mallow root and kaffir lime leaf. Still, most of Burnside's beers turn out surprisingly conventional. So order food to complement. The atmosphere is stuck between medieval rustic and laser-cut modern. Don't miss the Sweet Heat - or the juicy beef burger seared in duck fat. MITCH LILLIE WW.  Expect to be challenged here by the boundary pushing food and beer. For example, past one-offs includes the Fruity Monk, a Belgium ale made with pineapple, mango and papaya. The food runs a strange and adventurous gamut--think braunschweiger with crispy pig ears, gnocchi with lamb bolognese and burgers seared in duck fat. Insider's Tip - Try the Sweet Heat; a wheat ale made with apricot puree and Scotch Bonnet peppers. Light, fruity and with just enough heat to remind you of your last sunburn) - (PSSTS! - On Wednesdays, the budget minded will love the 20-ounce pints for $3)
  24. Occidental Brewing  6635 N. Baltimore Ave. (under the St. Johns bridge) - In 2016 they received a GOLD medal at the World Beer Cup for their Lucubrator Doppelbock.  No IPAs here. Only German style beers like the smooth Dunkel and hoppy Altbier. The flight is a good way to sample their interpretation of German brewing techniques. Insider's Tip - The Dunkel is a light bready beer with just the right amount of hoppy bite - (PSSTS! - Only brews with German-grown hops-which creates beers which don't have the citrusy notes found in NW hops) - SHOUTOUT - About 5-10 years ago Pilsners and Lagers (Breakside, Ninkasi, Upright, pFriem and Ecliptic) became very popular in Portland. One of our faves is Occidental way out in St John's, which has the richest expression of malt and hops.
  25. Lucky Lab Brewpub/Beer Hall/Tap Room FD 3 LOCATIONS - 915 SE HAWTHORNE BLVD., 1945 NW QUIMBY & 1700 N/KILLINGSWORTH - Check out the renovated warehouse known as the Lucky Lab. It's a smoke-free, laid-back pub in the heart of Southeast Portland. Most menu items come in under five bucks, and on Mondays, 20-ounce pints are just over two bucks. The Lab's beers cover a broad range of tastes from pale ales to porters.  Making old-school (1995) hoppy ales, they began back when Portland was a working class, blue collar town with a hippie sub-culture. The mellow, communal, lefty spirit that makes Portland both the least religious and one of the most liberal cities; you can see right here with people gathering on the back patio with their dogs that frequently turns into a union rally... If you want to understand Portland, stop at Lucky Lab for a quick pint. Also has great pizza. Inner SE. The Pearl
  26. Base Camp Brewing Co. - 930 SE Oak St., 477-7479. HOURS: Noon-9 pm Sunday-Wednesday, 11 am Thursday-Saturday. A crowd favorite for its emphasis on quality beer and outdoor adventure. Their famed S'mores Stout is one of the offerings in its 6-glass flight, at $10 (or 10 brews for $15). Food trucks are on hand for the hungry. In 2016 they received a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup for their Lost Meridian Wit wheat beer. "If you're going to give your bar a theme, you might as well go extreme. Base Camp Brewing embraces this ethos in both concept and execution. The new inner-Southeast brewpub is basically REI in bar form: a cavernous, urban ski lodge decked out with tables and chairs made with rocks and timber from Klamath Falls, bungee cords, carabiners, camping lanterns and a huge upturned canoe on the ceiling, with a front patio sporting fire pits and log benches that would make Walt Disney proud. Perhaps strategically, Base Camp forms the apex of a neighborhood triangle between an indoor rock-climbing gym and Southeast Grand Avenue's outdoor stores. My S'more Stout ($4.50) came served with a toasted marshmallow on the rim-a little over the top for me, but maybe not for the kind of people who think camping in the rain and dabbling in frostbite are enjoyable pastimes." RUTH BROWN WW.

It is most famous for Hefeweizen ("hey-fuh weizen"), but has a good slate of offerings for any taste bud. The menu for food here is pretty good, too. The brewery offers tours and sells all sorts of beer-related items. TAKE A WIDMER BROTHERS BREWERY TOUR FOR JUST $5 (Mondays - Thursdays at 3pm; Fridays at 2:00pm & 3:00pm; Saturdays at 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm & 3:00pm; Sundays at 1:00pm & 2:00pm. If you have a group of 5 or more, please call (503) 281-3333 for reservations.) While famous for the Hefeweizen, these days it's not what sets the brewery apart. The sheer volume of beer (700,000 barrels/year; do you smell it; the sweet aroma of grains roiling in hot water!) of their experimental seasonals and one-offs is what's producing some of their best beers. If you want to pay homage to the roots of Portland brewing in the historic 1890s building, get a Hefe, it still comes with a slice of lemon. "If you are looking for a grand, themed, whimsical brewpub tour...and
you enjoy your beer with great atmosphere and a side of local history and historic architecture, don't miss 3 or 4 of the dozens of pubs operated by the McMenamin Brothers. You can enjoy the elementary school experience, the poor farm experience, the Masonic Temple experience or the tiny flat-iron building looking out onto busy Portland experience, among others. They all come with Portland's crunchy vibe, psychedelic art and a slightly country feel." The Pearl.
Take your pick from any of the McMenamin's locations sprinkled all over town and the outlying areas. This is an institution in Portland. Buildings run the gamut from renovated historic hotels, grade schools to old to restored movie theaters. McMenamin's beers offer a full range of microbrews, with some great seasonals like Purple Haze.  Some of our favorites in or near Portland are the Kennedy School, Ringlers Annex, The White Eagle and Edgefield, a great property 15 mins from downtown that is an old county poor farm, a designated National Historic Landmark and has a winery & distillery too.  Each of these properties come with a heated salt-water soaking pool, so bring your suit. Or just stroll around the property with beer in hand. Check out the details HERE. Cheers!

  1. Ecliptic Brewing -(825 N Cook St.) 265-8002) You may not have yet stopped by Ecliptic Brewing, but you've almost certainly had John Harris' beer. I'll be back in a few weeks-Harris plans to roll out new beers around the solstices and equinoxes, and next up is a hearty winter ale. WW

(List in no particular order; open hours should be checked and confirmed):
  1. Deschutes Brewery & Public House* - FD (210 NW 11th Ave.) HOURS Sun-Tues 11am-10pm Wed-Thurs 11am-11pm Fri-Sat 11am-12am It's still on the short-list for the state's best brewery, and has a huge selection--everything from 4.5% cask ales, experimental Belgium's to imperial giants. MATTHEW KORFHAGE. WW  Some of the one-offs beers are brewed on-site in the shining copper kettles, but most are brewed in the larger Bend brewery. - 5th largest craft brewery in the U.S.)

Portland Brewing offers a tasty core of staple beers throwing some great seasonal mixes in to keep it interesting.
  5. Breakside Brewery-Slabtown (1570 NW 22nd ave.) FD - Gaining instant fame in 2015 for their IPA ("Best Beer in Oregon"), they are known for experimental ales using culinary ingredients. The brewery makes beer in many idiom's (IPAs, pilsners, kolsches, saisons and abbeys). 2 locations in the NW (Slabtown) and NE (out toward the airport).  The space impresses: window-paneled garage doors and a larger-than-life mural mark the entrance. - The seasonal beers move fast here--if you see a good one, get it now.)

  1. Hair of the Dog Brewing Co.  FD - (61 SE YAMHILL ST.) - Hours can be limited 11:30AM - 10PM, SUN 11:30AM - 8PM)  In this big, boxy former warehouse; what looms large is the outstanding ales.
  2. Wayfinder Beer - PATIO* FIRE PIT 304 SE 2nd ave. 503-718-BEER; Sun-Wed. 11-10pm Thurs-Sat. 11-midnight - Voted 'Best Brewpub', 'Best Brewer' & 'Brewery of the Year' by New School beer blog (2018) - Article -  Portland’s newest brewery/cocktail bar is Wayfinder Beer, and with almost 9,000 square feet it can fit a massive crowd.
  3. Cascade Barrel House 939 SE Belmont St. Hours: Sun - Mon: Noon - 10pm; Tues - Thu: Noon - 11pm; Fri - Sat: Noon - 12am FD  - Cascade Barrel House is particularly interesting, serving beers aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels and lambic-style sour beers flavored with apricot or cherry. - This is no fancy bar: Sports are on the TV behind the bar and the food is served in plastic baskets) - SHOUTOUT: Cascade Noyaux - It's been 10 years since Cascade started making its very strong, very tart 'Northwest Sours'.
  4. Modern Times - There's no better place in Portland to snap a trendy photo of a hazy IPA, sweet stout, or neon-red kettle sour. A giant mural of Macho Man Randy Savage gazes toward a wall collage of comic book pages inside this cavernous taproom, just around the corner from a food window designed to look like a San Diego taco truck (if it were a lifesize piñata). For those of us without blue checkmarks on Instagram, the SoCal brand's Portland outpost can be a bit much. But if you look past the sea of perfectly dressed beer tourists (and the more obvious styles), you'll find some of the city's finest beers. I've been particularly obsessed with the lagers. If the taproom has it, try the Italian Pilsner, which marries crackery malt with perfumey modern hopping techniques—taming the face-melting flavors of Modern Times' hazy IPAs. Parker Hall.  WW
  5. WW ...quietly sit with a book and a pint and while away a rainy afternoon or...on more sunny days, check out the sidewalk picnic tables.
  6. - (PSSTS! - Some of their beers are named after numbers that corresponds to that beers 'starting gravity', the amount of sugar in the beer before it ferments.) - SHOUTOUT - Upright has had a huge effect on our beer, directing the city's palate toward complex, food-friendly ales.  Their #6, a dark rye saison is one of their heavier ales, their most food-friendly and the most unusual.
  8. Mt. Hood Brewing Co. - PDX - "They brought Mt. Hood to Portland! Mt. Hood Brewing Co. Tilikum Station is NOW OPEN, located on the east end of Tilikum Crossing across from the Oregon Rail Heritage Center and near OMSI. This new Mt. Hood Brewing location features wood-fired pizzas alongside our classic Mt. Hood Brewing craft ales, including a new Tilikum exclusive, the Mt. Hood Lager. The restaurant with extra seating in an adjacent train car and caboose is air-conditioned and family-friendly.  We look forward to seeing you in Portland!"
  9. Away Days - English Classics / Bright geometric stools and hanging houseplants greet you inside this tiny pub, a wall- and kitchen-sharing satellite of the Toffee Club next door. The owners of the popular British-themed pub took over this space and the brewery within it upon the closing of Scout Beer in early 2019, bringing on ex-Alameda brewer Marshall Kunz to help make English-style ales. Two cask taps pour warm, flat classics like Bus Stop Bitter and Brits Abroad Red Ale, with all beers leaning toward a more classic malty balance than fruit-bombed modernity. There's even the occasional lager for good measure. The real ace up Away Days' sleeve is those casks. If you're looking for a place to drink a classic English ale and scarf down a döner kebab, this is the only game in town. It even shows the Timbers on real-world away days. Parker Hall.  WW
  10. Laurelwood Public House and Brewery 5115 NE Sandy
  11. Lucky Lab/ McMenamins - Making old-school (1995) hoppy ales, they began back when Portland was a working class, blue collar town with a hippie sub-culture. Inner SE. If you are looking for a grand, themed brewpub, a McMenamins choice is in order. With a dozen or more properties to choose from, you can enjoy the elementary school experience, the poor farm experience, the Masonic Temple experience or the tiny flat-iron building looking out onto busy Portland experience (Ringlers Annex), amongst others. They all come with Portland's crunchy vibe, psychedelic art and a slightly country feel. The Pearl.

Hood River Oregon - Oregonian File Photo

Hood River & Astoria
In Hood River, you sit in one brewpub, and you’ve got a close-up, backyard view of one of the grandest mountains on Earth. You sit in a few others, and you see the sparkling blue of the Columbia River and a rainbow visual of this water sports mecca, with a ballet of windsurfers and kiteboarders gliding past in seeming effortlessness. And yet another brewery’s view brings it all together, with the river, the town across the way and Mount Hood in the background, then throw in the dramatic landscape of the Columbia River Gorge, just to make the whole thing absurdly beautiful. Portland’s play to beat The Dalles literally cost a mint

The Oregon delegation would not stop trying to switch the mint's location to Portland. Finally the gold rush petered out, and the feds said, “Never mind!”

The source of Oregon is not Portland, it is Astoria, a wild-west port town which became known as 'The most wicked place on Earth'.  Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, established in 1811 at Fort Astoria (reconstruction; right) with other historic forts being Fort Clatsop (reconstruction) and Fort Stevens (original).  It is dotted with Victorian-era homes and a 1920s Art Deco-era downtown, set in the backdrop of where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
It's a town built on disasters.
  1. With more than 2000 shipwrecks on the coast, often with whole crews lost, the Columbia River Bar at Astoria accounts for about 300 of those, to became known as 'the World's Most Dangerous Bar'.
  2. Then it was the great fire of 1922 which swept through all of downtown, destroying it.  More below.

ASTORIA - Oldest city west of the Mississippi, from 1811 (Brewery List)
* Along the old trolley route
  • Fort George Brewery - Score a fir-infused Magnanimous IPA in the shadow of Fort George's giant fermenters. Also on the site is Fort Astoria (15th and Exchange streets), the site where John Jacob Astor's fur traders originally constructed their post in 1811.
  • Buoy Beer Co. - "Sip a Czech pilsner while spotting sea lions in the glass 'hole' in the floor; and the food was above average for bar food. The beer was incredible as always.” *
  • Rogue Ales and Public House at Pier 39 in Astoria. If you like good beer you absolutely must make a point to stop at Rogue Brewery. Not only does Rogue make some of the most quality and delicious beers you'll ever imbibe, as well as serve some of the best pub grub, but the brewery is located out on the dock. You cannot help but feel like a salty old sailor when you belly up to the bar here. It is very hard not to completely fall in love with this place, especially if you love maritime views, hand-crafted ales and maritime nostalgia. *

...Astoria is rich with history and feels, more than anything, like old Portland. It's perhaps the most Oregon place in Oregon. Its history is the fishing & logging industries.
  1. ...The 3rd defining disaster was the complete collapse of the tuna-canning and logging industries in the 1980s. It has always been a 'drinking town with a fishing problem'--designed by drunks for drunks. And so it's fitting that the town's economic salvation took place when Astoria rebuilt on beer with the opening of Fort George Brewery in 2004, with many others following."
