Relive the Frontier Feel. Once being the salmon canning capitol of the world and the 'graveyard of the Pacific', Astoria and its surrounding areas has many historic things to see and stop at. Having just celebrated its bicentennial, there's been a lot of hoopla and attention. The attention is well deserved. Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies and has more historic markers than anywhere in Oregon. Also, it's a forward-thinking and surprisingly hip little city. Many Portland expats have settled here, bringing high standards and a sense of cool that, coupled with the incredible natural beauty of the area, makes this city a charming, atmospheric getaway with many wonderful surprises. A 'few' hours of:
If you're coming in to Astoria on a cruise ship, we recommend a 5 or 6 hour trip to the Seaside/ Cannon Beach area, or Tillamook (Tillamook Cheese Factory, and Cape Meares). You can do both areas in 8 or 9 hours. On the way to Astoria (100 min ride) we'll play you some interesting AUDIO about Astoria. Astoria Astoria Videos |
Astoria in the 1890s appears much as it does today.
The 'Graveyard of the Pacific' @Astoria
"Mere description can give little idea of the terrors of the bar of the Columbia," Navy explorer Charles Wilkes told Congress in 1841. "All who have seen it have spoken of the wildness of the scene, and the incessant roar of the waters, representing it as one of the most fearful sights that can possibly meet the eye of the sailor" (Schwantes, 7). |
